French to English translations [PRO]
Science - Fisheries
French term or phrase: naitainces
"J’ai disséqué un mâle dont les ***naitances*** n’étaient pas très-grosses; elles formaient deux cordons amincis aux deux extrémités…"

From a 19th century Cuvier paper on the lampris. The only word I could find is "soft roe", but I don't think this is what he is referring to here. Any help would be appreciated...

that's what i think it is, the eggs, the births, its probably an hermafrodite fish....
Hermaphroditic animals have both male and female reproductive systems. Hermaphroditism provides a means for animals to reproduce sexually without finding mates.

Notes to answerer
Asker: The author has dissceted a male fish and is describing something to do with the reproductive channels, I'm just looking for the exact term if there is one for what he's actually describing, or looking at

Asker: The scientist I am working with is emphatic that it this particular fish is not hermaphroditic which is why we are puzzled at the terminology!
