Furniture / Household Appliances / restoring a leather sofa

Would 'primer' be the correct term here?

English translation:leather prep
Explanation:
Not personally familiar with this, but this is what I have found. I thought it might be a trade name, but it seems to be used by lots of different manufacturers. It looks very much like the same thing as préfond d'accroche and seems to serve the same purpose.

Leather prep
The leather prep is used to remove the manufactured finish from leather. It also removes an solvent soluble waxes, oils & silicones, which unless removed could cause adhesion problems when colouring at later stages.

Leather Prep
An extremely necessary part of the system! Leather MUST be prepped properly and sufficiently before beginning any type of repair or refinishing. Leather Prep is specifically formulated to provide you with the appropriate chemicals necessary for a permanent, long lasting repair. Additional Leather Prep may be required on larger projects. Available Sizes:

How it works: First you remove the manufactured finish from the leather with the leather prep. This allows the colourants to adhere and penetrate the leather, giving a sound base covering. You then spray on a coloured coating for uniformity and to get a nice natural finish. The job is then sealed in with a professional leather finish. This finish protects and enhances the leather and stops it from wearing out.

mordant

Explanation:
VERY low confidence here, as I have no knowledge whatsoever of this term in this particualr field!

However, in certain other traditional crafts, the term 'mordant' is used to refer to a product used to help the next coating 'bite' and stick properly onto a substarte, which seems to be roughly your situation here?

I think it could be an avenue worth just checking out...

agree  Alan Douglas: This seems to be the nearest trm in English that is specific to the preparation of leather for re-colouring. See: http://www.furnitureclinic.co.uk/Leather_Colourant_Kit.htm. The French method described uses a 2-part system with separate degreaser.

-> Thanks, Alan. And yes, it does seem to combine the two steps of the French system, but I couldn't find anything else either. Just noticed your link is the same as my second and last one.
