Thanks all...is it related to "lès" as used in placenames, i.e. Fontaine lès Dijon is a commune - in a strip - adjacent to Dijon? I'd be interested to know.

en lés regarding origin of word

Explanation:
Lez or lès comes from the Latin word latus meaning side (eg lateral) and means "près de" but only when referring to places.

To make things confusing, your word, lé (pl. lés) also comes from a Latin word latus, this time meaning wide, and means the width of fabric between the two selvages or the width of a band of wallpaper.

For the carpet I guess it means it's a roll as opposed to carpet squares.
