French term or phrase: 3ème geste
This birth-certificate extract from Guinea lists the usual things like parents' information and child's date and place of birth. Then it says:
Rang de Naissance: 3ème GESTE
I was assuming that the client was the third child born in Conakry that day, but what is the "GESTE" part?
Explanation: I'm not familiar with the situation in Guinea, but I have come across a few other cases where 'geste' is recorded to identify the order of births within a family.
The usual English expression would be first-born, second-born, third-born, etc.
The purpose of this information depends on the country (it can affect inheritances, etc.); some countries include still-births in the sequence, others do not.
The number of pregnancies prior to (or including) the current birth is totally irrrelevant in the context of birth certificate. All the more so after a heading "Rang de Naissance:" ...
Supplementary to fourth's answer - I think with hindsight it should be "third pregnancy" rather than "third birth", as 'gestation' refers to the carrying of the child rather than its delivery. Sorry, I had no more space to add a note to fourth's answer!
