But since Explanation: "Whereas" has two quite different meanings: "1 a: while on the contrary b: although 2: In view of the fact that: since—used especially to introduce a [legal] preamble". This is the second meaning: "attendu que", which as my dictionary reference shows, means "since", not "although". It's not a preamble (it says "mais attendu que"), where "whereas" would be the correct translation. So to avoid any confusion, I would say "since", not "whereas".
