Social Sciences - Geography / maps (economic)
French term or phrase: dynamique/peu dynamique
I know there are a myriad of ways of translating this, but I would like your opinion. This appears in the legends of maps, describing cities or industries:
industries dynamiques : chimie, electronique
regions industrielles dynamiques
ville industrielle dynamique, pole de haute technologie
ville peu dynamique, industries traditionelles (acier, chimie)

for dynamique I've thought of booming, thriving, flourishing, properous city/industry (leaning towards prosperous)
And the only thing I can come up with for "ville peu dynamique" is sluggish.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Rita Heller: 3:12pm Oct 3, 2005: sluggish is the best answer! -

active/not very active; static
Explanation:
why not..it works fine..it's the usual Business TErm here

in business, dynamique is merely active...as opposed to inactive..or somewhat active

This was an extremely hard question to grade, because all of your suggestions were helpful, and I actually used a combination of them in the different legends: active industries, lively cities, sleepy cities, stagnating industries... a myriad of combinations could work. But I think Jane's answer works best as a blanket term that could cover all instances, and thus is best for the glossary entry. Many thanks to all!

progressive/sleepy

Explanation:
although one is not the exact antithesis of the other, they may work. I prefer sleepy to sluggish, but feel that these words are too 'judgemental'. Perhaps even a term such as low-tech might be better.

peu dynamique stagnant

Explanation:
Generally applied to water, but my dico. does also allow for other contexts - and gives it as a synonym of sluggish, which I wouldn't use in this context.

agree Tony M: Possibly 'stagnating' might work better in this specific context?

-> Thanks Dusty, and of course quite right that it would need to be adapted to fit the sentence.

neutral Rita Heller: dynamic is good but undynamic is rarely used//just 54 vs 41,000 for sluggish//yes, I saw that after using www.google.co.uk - in the U.S. we use www.google.com - so it is a BE vs AE thing

-> Not that uncommon - http://www.google.fr/search?hl=fr&q=undynamic&meta= // it says 27,000 for undynamic on the Google I use! /// not to mention Google.fr, which I use - strange that the results are different

thriving or important/quiet

Explanation:
if they're to be terms for a map legend...if it's industries dynamiques I think they could be something like important rather than anything more specific; sluggish is good but I don't think it fits so well for this context-?
