French to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Geography / maps (economic) | | French term or phrase: dynamique/peu dynamique | I know there are a myriad of ways of translating this, but I would like your opinion. This appears in the legends of maps, describing cities or industries:
industries dynamiques : chimie, electronique
regions industrielles dynamiques
ville industrielle dynamique, pole de haute technologie
ville peu dynamique, industries traditionelles (acier, chimie)
for dynamique I've thought of booming, thriving, flourishing, properous city/industry (leaning towards prosperous)
And the only thing I can come up with for "ville peu dynamique" is sluggish.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions. |

| | active/not very active; static | Explanation: why not..it works fine..it's the usual Business TErm here

in business, dynamique is merely active...as opposed to inactive..or somewhat active |

| Note from asker to answererThis was an extremely hard question to grade, because all of your suggestions were helpful, and I actually used a combination of them in the different legends: active industries, lively cities, sleepy cities, stagnating industries... a myriad of combinations could work. But I think Jane's answer works best as a blanket term that could cover all instances, and thus is best for the glossary entry. Many thanks to all! 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer |

| progressive/sleepy
Explanation: although one is not the exact antithesis of the other, they may work. I prefer sleepy to sluggish, but feel that these words are too 'judgemental'. Perhaps even a term such as low-tech might be better.

| peu dynamique stagnant
Explanation: Generally applied to water, but my dico. does also allow for other contexts - and gives it as a synonym of sluggish, which I wouldn't use in this context.
