French to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Geography / soil types | | French term or phrase: sols minéraux bruts d’érosion | Part of a humanitarian project report for the region of Saraya, Senegal, outlining the region's geography.
La région de Kédougou présente le relief le plus accidenté du Sénégal, c’est une succession de plateaux, de lits de cours d’eau parfois très encaissés, de cascades et de collines. Parmi les sols répertoriés en 1964-65, on peut noter que *les sols minéraux bruts d’érosion* et les sols peu évolués d’érosion gravillonnaire couvrent plus de 96 % de la zone.
I have seen "lithosols" as a possible translation, but I would really like to have confirmation from someone before selecting this term. |
| | | English translation:mineral soils as left by erosion | Explanation: Or something like that, i.e. not an organic soil, nor a mineral soil which subsequent to erosion (wind, rain, ice, etc.) has been invaded by organic species creating an organic-soil overlayer.
Post-erosion mineral soil?

Turns out (according to the Dictionnaire de Science du Sol, Lozet & Mathieu, Lavoisier) that this is part of the French soil classification. They give "unweathered mineral soil" as a translation of sol minéral brut and specify that sols minéraux bruts d'érosion (1 of 3 subclasses) are lithosols or régosols. However (see your other question).
The sol minéral brut class breaks down into:
- sols minéraux bruts non climatiques, sols non évolués sur matérial minéral récemment érodé ou mis en place avec:
.sols minéraux bruts d'érosion (lithosol ou régosol);
.sols minéraux bruts d'apport allvial, colluvial, éolien et volcanique.
- Sols minéraux bruts climatiques des déserts froids (cryosols bruts).
- Sols minéraux bruts des déserts chauds (ou xériques). |
