______
I'm assuming that the naughty baron was extracting water from the canal where it joins the Coulon for his own use. I'm confused by "fuyant" and by whether the expression is "eaux du fuyant" or "le fuyant du canal".
I'd be most grateful for any help with this - many thanks! |

"Tailrace", then by the looks of it.
However, also by the looks of it, your canal is not a millrace, given that it bears a name.

Asker: brilliant, thanks! I wasn't aware that it was connected to a mill, but this is indeed the Saint-Julien canal, built for the purposes of irrigation. Just found some photos that appear to show the aqueduct carrying the canal water OVER the Coulon - presumably on to the baron's property
Asker: later...
I sent this off using your suggestion, and will let you know if the client says anything different. Thanks once again!
