French to English translations [PRO] Geography / Town planning history | | French term or phrase: l’époque des « campagnes » à Marseille | | In an account of the development of the city of Marseille. Context: "Il ne pouvait que souscrire au projet Bernex, qui lui permettrait de poursuivre son oeuvre et de désenclaver les quartiers, **à l’époque des « campagnes »**, au Sud de la colline Notre-Dame, vers Saint-Giniez et la mer." Talking about Anthelme Bernex associating with Jean-Baptiste Falque to develop part of Marseille. What "campagnes" are they talking about, please? Any help gratefully received! |

| | English translation:at the time of the campaign (to develop the area) | Explanation: My hunch is that at this historical time, there must have been in Marseille a "battle" waged over the development in outlying areas, that possible became know by the locals as "des campagnes". Maybe some historical research of the epoch would turn up an answer

As I read it again, I'm thinking also perhaps it is simply referring to "at the time 'undeveloped' land" existed around Marseille; hence "des campagnes" |
