French to English translations [PRO] Geology | | French term or phrase: sciage à contrepasse | Dear fellow translators,
Here is the context:
"Le sciage normal a lieu parallèlement aux lits de carrière (sciage à passe), mais est également réalisé perpendiculairement, surtout pour les tranches les plus épaisses (*sciage à contrepasse*).
I belive that "sciage à passe" = "cross-cut sawing". Therefore what is "sciage à contrepasse"?
Many thanks in advance as always. |

Explanation: I don't think we have a similar expression in English. To say "the normal direction of sawing is parallel to the bedding ("along-the-bedding" sawing)" would be ridiculous.
I think you're mistaken about your interpretation of à passe. If anything, "cross-cut" would be à contrepasse. I'd have to check if "cross cut" is said of stone. For timber, certainly, and special saws are used, but timber is a "linear oriented" material, with grains and fibre: stone is far less so, and I very much doubt separate saws are used for cutting in different directions.

Veine cut stone is cut across the bed and exposes the sedimentary (layered) nature of the stone. The veined pattern of this cut is most suited for sills and coping, however this can be used for all other applications. Fleuri cut stone is cut with the sedimentary bed, which reveals a rich, marbled and flowered pattern. Fleuri is suitable for all applications.
