Science - Geology / mining
French term or phrase: Leonnage
In a list of job duties for a junior geologist on a gold mining project in Africa: Veille sur les aspects techniques et practiques des operations de terrain (LEONNAGE, cartographie, echantillonage, implantation et logging des tranchees, puits, et sondages)

I have no idea what this means, but assume it is some kind of geological surveying/sampling technique related to mining. It generates no Google hits.

trailing
Explanation:
After looking for different spelling combination, and taking into account that this document may contain some regional African spelling, all I can find that is remotely connected to the geological surveying/sampling technique related to mining is:

layon (nom masculin): Sentier en forêt = trail, track.
leonnage = trailing, tracking.(???)

trail (to): transitive verb
1a: to draw or drag loosely along a surface: allow to sweep the ground [Merriam Webster Dictionary Online]

Trail-blazing is a more specific term as per Bourth. Thanks.

agree  clain: Good work, Simon Charass! This must be the answer! Leonnage instead of layonnage. Look at this reference: http://www.esrifrance.fr/SIG2007/ALPI_Cameroun.htm And many other hits including 'layonnage' and 'cartographie'.

If it's an underground mine they may need to clear tracks through the forest to access the site. If it's an open-cast mine in a forested area they may want to divide the forest into clearly demarcated areas by cutting breaks.

agree  clain: Trail-blazing is better than trailing alone, which can have other meanings. There is a definition of the verb trail that fits: 2. to make (a track or path) through (a place) (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/trail).

agree  Simon Charass: Yes. Trail-blazing is a more specific term than just blazing which can be interpreted in multiple ways.
