Science - Geology
French term or phrase: Craie franche tendre
In a list of different strata in a geological report.

I found "tendre" to mean "soft" in this context, but I'm stuck on "franc". Could it mean "pure" perhaps?

Any help much appreciated!

English translation:Soft, compact (or fine-grained) chalk
Explanation:
franc in the Paris Basin means hard (the scale goes "roche franche, roche, demi-roche, roche douce, roche demi-douce" - see the GDT), but here it seems to have its other meaning of compact or fine-grained, since it can't be both tendre (soft) and hard.

Thanks - compact would certainly seem to work in the context.

soft sound chalk
