French to English translations [PRO] Science - Geology / liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons
French term or phrase:commission nationale d’orientation, de suivi et d’évaluation .....
would anyone know the "official" translation of this commission name, or would like to hazard an educated guess?????? Commission created May 25, 2011. full name: commission nationale d’orientation, de suivi et d’évaluation des techniques d’exploration et d’exploitation des hydrocarbures liquides et gazeux.
Additionally, if anyone criticizes any of your choices of words, you can say "Yes, but I chose that word deliberately to get the acronym".
I wonder what the French will trim it down to: "CNOSETIEHLG" alone IS a bit of a mouthful!
well i have modified my thinking - National Commission for the orientation, monitoring and evaluation ....etc
Acronym inspired by Bourth - the NOME Commission - how's that?
well you get major STARS for the acronym!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what I have been working with is the National commission for the guidance, monitoring and evaluation of techniques for the exploration and exploitation of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons.........
Assuming this is in France and not in Canada where there would have been ample preliminary discussion, news reports, etc., in English, this is so recent I imagine you get first bite at the apple!

educated guess
Explanation: Since you're asking for educated guesses, howzabout:
National Committee for Steering, Monitoring, and Surveying Techniques for Exploration and Implementation of Liquid and Gas Hydrocarbons
For short it could be "Steering Committee for Hydrocarbons Implementation and Surveying Techniques, and Exploration" or, shorter still, SCHISTE.

Don't forget, though, that when faced with acronyms that don't quite turn into words, the French will cheat and take multiple letters at the head of a word, or letters within a word, or will NOT use the initial letter of an "important" word, so you could have:
national Steering, surveying and monitoring Committee for gas and liquid Hydrocarbons Implementation and (S)exploration TEchniqueS" or SCHISTES.
I absolutely had to throw in that extra S or it would have come out as SCHITES which might have been miskahnstrued.

National Committee for the Orientation, Follow-up and Evaluation
Explanation: The use of "commission" or "committee" depends on the structure of this body. Normally a committee is composed of a small group like a parliamentay one designated for a specific purpose. Commission however refers to a larger body, an institution by itself like the European Commission, FCC (Federal Communications Commission). Depending on the context, you decide.

I believe that the word "commission" is more appropriate in this case since it refers to a larger body based on its composition as per the article below. I would like to add that guidance and monitoring are more appropriate than orientation and follow-up. http://collectif-carmen.org/index.php?post/2011/05/26/Les-sé...
