First of all, note that it is 'passées', which would be 'pasts' in the plural, but really make no sense at al here.

I think you need to be looking rather at the other broad meaning of 'passée', i.e. a pass (rather than a past)

Even a general dictionary like R+C gives: track or flight as suggestions in specific contexts, I feel sure you'll need to look along those sort of lines to find the correct term in a geological context.
