French to English translations [PRO] Science - Geology / types of soil
French term or phrase:Terre argilo calcaire rouge (riche en fer)
Hi, it's me again.
I'm still translating these things. The one I have a doubt on is "terre argilo calcaire rouge (riche en fer)"
I would translate it by "red clay-limestone soil (rich in iron)". - though I don't like it at all-
But I found something about "terra rossa". Is it the same thing or is it another type of soil?
Well I'm asking to people who speak the language to see if my translation is suitable, if it's understandable. If you happen to be an expert, good. If you're not and you don't say something that might be wrong, even better.
As someone said a geologist agreed with my translation, I think I'll keep it. It is better to keep it real simple as visitors' are not geology experts.
Appears to be the same composition. So I think it depends on whether that description is used in the area you're dealing with. If not, the more structural description would be appropriate.

The wines from the village of Langlade, close to the city of Nimes (east of Languedoc), once had a reputation comparable to the wines from Bourgogne – which they were often compared to- up to the XIXth century. Langlade wines were served at the table of Louis XIV in Versailles. The 1850’s Philoxera then destroyed the 600 Ha of vines that belonged to the “Cru de Langlade”, including the local’s memories of the area’s great potential. 200 private cellars out of a village of 600 souls. All gone.
Rémy Pedreno
After partnering with Michel Rostaing from the Rhône for the first four vintages, he now owns 10Ha in the area. And doesn’t want any more. He even admits that less would be better, so he could do an even better wine. His total production to this day is an average 35 000 bottles. “with half of that”, I’m sure I would have the time to improve my work a lot”.
Intuition is Rémy’s guideline. Including in the choice of the right date of harvest or the duration of fermentation. Intuition, taste and Humility. No maturation analysis here. just a stroll in the vines, a daily taste at the grapes.. this is how he knows when it’s time to harvest.
Listening to him speak about his winemaking as we’re strolling around one of his favourite plot of land – ***** a magnificent mix of chalk and dark red clay ******* that made me think of soils seen around Romanée-Conti – one would think wine is so easy it’s a no-brainer: “it’s simple” he says, “good grapes picked at the right time; you let It macerate and then you age it”. It’s all so simple..
