French term or phrase: cardeux

From the report of a 1940s prospecting expedition in French West Africa:

"De nombreux marigots, descendus du cirque de collines environnant, ont dû prévoir une accumulation assez cardeuse de gravier au fond de la cuvette occupée par le village."

This accumulation of gravel had made the village a centre of small-scale gold mining.

Note that a typing or transcription error is a distinct possibility. However, I'm having an inspiration failure on it, so any ideas would be appreciated! Merci d'avance!

Explanation:
Assuming that this is (as so often) an error caused by faulty extraction from an abtique photocopy, "sableuse" seems plausible, both typograpically (looks like cardeuse) and geologically (common adjective for gravels).

Explanation:
It's a big jump from one to the other, I know, but it IS at least logical that the marigots should have formed muddy/silty accumulations of gravel washed down from the hills.

You'll find a goodly number of ghits with accumulation vaseuse in relation to related phenomena on the shoreline, in estuaries, etc.
