French term or phrase: les revendications identitaires
I am thinking along the lines of 'struggle for identity' - do you think it could be translated like this? Is there a set term in English? I know what it's saying but am struggling to find a lovely buzzword(s) for it!

It is in Chirac's speech on laïcité from Dec 2003:

'Mais le monde change, les frontières s'abaissent, les échanges se multiplient. Dans le même temps, les revendications identitaires ou communautaires s'affirment ou s'exacerbent, au risque, souvent, du repli sur soi, de l'égoïsme, parfois même de l'intolérance.'

Thanks all!! :)

or maybe "search" but "quest" seems to match the general tone better.

(claims based on) identity politics

Explanation:
I think the usual term for this in English is "identity politics" - not a struggle *for* identity per se but claims based on one's specific/essential cultural difference.

I'd suggest something like "At the same time, claims based on identity or community politics..."

It might not even be necessary to include "claims", if it seems implied by "politics".

Nb. I would not say "struggle for identity" because this suggests something analogous to a personal search for identity where the latter is undefined and here it is almost the opposite: a struggle for *recognition* of an already well-defined identity (as whatever specific group).

assertion of identity

Explanation:
It sounds to me as if the intended meaning is along the lines of "communities are increasingly asserting their identity"
