French term or phrase: tournée de VRP
Dimanche 15 mai, le voici qui pose le pied sur le tarmac de l’aéroport, de retour d’une épuisante tournée de VRP en Afrique du Sud, en Turquie et dans le Golfe.

I assume this is an acronym for "Vendeur, Représentant et Placier", i.e.

trade mission
Explanation:
I think you're right about the definition of VRP (i.e. a travelling salesperson). Here, presumably, it's colloquially referring to a trade mission.

It's up to you whether to keep "trade mission" or try to find something snappier, which will depend on the tone of your text.

Good luck,

"a diplomatic sales campaign" might be a less formal way of translating the term.

agree  polyglot45: though I tend to think the choice of words implies that the guy has been on a sales campaign, something more earthy than the sophisticated "trade mission"

-> Yes, I'd say there's definitely a "sales pitch" involved - what trade missions are all about, too, just enshrouded in a more dignified-sounding term.

a salesman's tour

Explanation:
It's rather ironical when applied to a politician who has been trying to sell projects or find new markets and prospects for his country
