French term or phrase: Grand électeur
Description of artist Bellotto's opportunist, self-promoting activities.

What would this be during the 18th century?

"Il fit agir auprès du **Grand électeur** de Saxe, qui, désolé, navré de n'avoir pu attirer l'oncle (Canaletto) à sa cour, s'empressa appeler à Dresde le neveu (Bellotto), infiniment plus débrouillard et plus apte à s'adapter à l'existence brillante des palais royaux."

Merci!

Elector
Explanation:
with capital letter, meaning a member of the college, constituted in 1138 by 3 archbishops and 4 national dukes to elect the candidate to be proposed for Emperor of the Roman Empire. It was adapted several times until as of 1438 it stopped working, the crown remaining in the Habsburg family. The title however remained.

electing duke

Explanation:
the electing dukes (or kurfürsten later on) were the ones electing the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.

in Saxe, I just read he was called the "Duke of Saxony".

Yes it's true that the term "electing duke" does not exist, and that not all electors are dukes. I just thought that "the electing Duke of Saxony" could have been used here, since most electors were nobles anyway, and it gives a sense of the adjective "Grand" used her with "électeur". But you're all right, it might be better to stick with the text and say "the elector of Saxony". After all we are not historians. However the term "prince-elector" should perhaps be used. As Kurfürst, is "kur", meaning "choose", and "fürst" is German for "prince".

neutral  BrigitteHilgner: "electing duke" is not a term used in German history - "Kurfürst" is generally translated as "elector".
3 hrs
  -> perhaps "prince-elector"

disagree  writeaway: the term in English is Elector and not every Elector was a Duke. for example: http://www.nndb.com/gov/605/000097314/

disagree  B D Finch: Agree with writeaway and Brigitte Hilgner - how do you justify that confidence level for what appears to be a guess?
5 hrs
  -> I would have, with confidence, translated by "the electing Duke of Saxony". However I now realised that the proper term is "prince-elector".
