C’est enfin en 1808, sous le règne de Napoléon 1er, que le capitaine Boutin est expédié pour faire une reconnaissance précise des forts et des batteries, mission qui prouve bien que le royaume d’Alger présentait toutes les caractéristiques d’un système défensif fortement dissuasif. Le rapport qu’il remettra quelques mois plus tard, intitulé « rapport sur la reconnaissance des forts et batteries» servira de base à la prise d’Alger en 1830 et sera le point de départ de la colonisation.

disagree  B D Finch: "Recce" is British slang. The correct word when using a formal register, in either UK or US English, is "reconnaissance".

neutral  LaraBarnett: I don't know this word "recce", but if it is some sort of slang, I wouldn't use it in a historical text. Reconnaissance is used in UK English.

agree  njweatherdon: I think it is correct for the target term. But in the sentence I'd probably say "engage in detailed reconnaissance of forts and batteries" or some such thing.

Explanation:
While there is nothing wrong with saying "reconnaissance report," if we use survey here, it will solve another problem in this sentence. At the beginning, it states that "le capitaine Boutin est expédié pour faire une reconnaissance précise des forts et des batteries." You can't say that he was sent to perform "a precise reconnaissance." But, you can say " precise survey." I like the sound of survey here anyway, and it keeps the translation of this term consistent. The added bonus of using "survey" is that it encompasses both the idea of a formal report "rapport" as well as the reconnaissance itself. So you could use one word instead of two!
