Alger possédait un très grand nombre de batteries dont les nombreuses descriptions topographiques exécutées par les belligérents, et plans de situation nous ont laissé la mémoire des noms et des localisations: ainsi, la batterie de la porte-neuve, ou babdjedid, qui possédait neuf canons ; la Topanet essalaoui, construite en contrebas, qui fut détruite en 1870 au moment de la construction du boulevard Gambetta , le Topanet el asel, possédait trois pièces dirigées vers la mer, mais fut également détruit en 1875.
