French to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - History / Reims | | French term or phrase: A Clovis côme il fult notoire | A Clovis côme il fult notoire
Ung barrit de vin prépara
Et luy dilt tu auras victoire
Autant que le vin durera.
This is the story about St Remi giving Clovis a flask of blessed wine and telling him to drink some everyday and to pursue his foes so long as there was still some left.
The other lines I was going to translate as:
A barrel of wine did prepare for him
And declare that he would be victorious
So long as there remained wine within |

- Charlie Bavington: 12:51am Jan 27, 2005: to df49f - as I'm sure Mark would tell you, notorious nowadays means only "famous for negative reasons". - traviata: 1:10am Jan 27, 2005: My Oxford Thesaurus lists: INFAMOUS, scandalous; well known, famous, famed, legendary. I like this last one: I'll try to rhyme something with it :) - Yakov Tomara: 6:43am Jan 27, 2005: "barril" rather than "barrit" AFAIK (www.maisons-champagne.com/glatre/ pages/02_gallo_romains/evenements/0036v.htm ) -

| | Another try | Explanation: To Clovis, as the story tells,
He gave a cask bunged tight and fast
And said, 'You'll hear the victory bells
While this my wine will last.' |
