SIRET (business registration) number
Explanation:
Need a mix.

Business rather than company -- covers everything.

I don't think unique is relevant really, that goes without saying, doesn't it?

Notes about Siret Numbers
French Siret numbers are made up of 14 digits, the first 9 digits comprise the Siren number. All legitimate trades & businesses must be registered with either the Chambre de Metiers, Chambres de Commerce, Tribunaux de Commerce, the URSSAF, Services Fiscaux, or their regional office of the INSEE.

SIRET numbers used by French tradesmen

All enterprises registered in France will obtain a SIRET number at the time of registration. This is a number that you can check to be sure that an enterprise is correctly registered and authorised to work on your property.

http://www.francethisway.com/renovation/siret-number.html

An enterprise must be not just registered, but registered to do the kind of work that you are asking them to do. The SIRET number must appear on the devis as well as the final invoices - so you can check before accepting a devis whether the company is authorised.

Officially it should also appear on any publicity from the enterprise, but I think this happens rather less often.

et les définitions officielles sont présentes:

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Système_d’identification_du_rép...

http://www.insee.fr/fr/methodes/default.asp?page=definitions...

SIRET
Traduction en anglais : SIRET number
This is another unique code used to identify business for tax reasons. It consists of 9 numbers (the SIREN code) plus another 5. I believe there is no equivalent in English, as SIRET is a registered trademark.

From
http://www.sirene.tm.fr/annonce/glossaire/siret.htm
