French term or phrase: alais
Comes from the report of a prospecting expedition in French West Africa in the 1940s.

"Le 6 février 1945 enfin débarquait à Kouroussa un jeune ingénieur adjoint des mines contractuel (alais), M. Berthoumieux, venu récemment de France au titre de la relève."

A typing error is a distinct possibility, but I'm having an inspiration failure as to what it could be.

Alais ou Alès

Explanation:
This is a place, although the upper case is missing on the proper noun. There was an engineering school there.
Check these links for confirmation:

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alais

According to the second link, the current name is Alès. Alais is the ancient one.
