I think it is hard to tell what the writer means. You may want to play it safe by saying something like: "A gould managers should always hire employees who add to his/her strengths."

I think your translation is fine (though I would say "himself"! Anyway, maybe the patron is not worried about losing his job, for whatever reason – job security (a la union jobs), nephew of the CEO, stronger managerial skills (maybe the person being hired is technical), retirement, etc.
