French term or phrase: décrocher la palme
Hi,

This is from an article about unemployment in Europe. The sentence is in a paragraph which discusses differing levels of unemployment in different countries: "Dans les deux cas, l’Espagne décroche la palme du pays que l’on veut fuir, et les Pays-Bas, celle du plus clément." I can't find any reference to "décrocher la palme" anywhere.

Thanks.

Thanks everyone. In the end I wne with "… In both cases, Spain wins the award that no-one wants and the Netherlands gets away lightly." The paragraph which follows talks about Spain having increasing levels of unemployment.

Many ways of saying it, with the French refering to La Palme d'Or awarded at the Cannes Film Festival

tops the list/got it

Explanation:
Hello,

My translation: As far as people wanting to leave their country, Spain tops the list, while the Netherlands got it for the least affected (by high unemployment).

I hope this helps.

I meant "got it for" in the answer box.

I don't think any phrase with "prize" works well here in English.

Explanation:
See example - just what sprang to mind

Example sentence(s):
  • "..Spain comes top when it comes to fleeing the country, whereas Holland seems more of a job-seeker's paradise"

takes the prize

Explanation:
"Takes the prize" can have a more negative connotation:

Repros Therapeutics (NASDAQ: RPRX) easily takes the prize for most dismal earnings report of the day.
