French term or phrase: adhésion directe
Map of members of an international trade organisation:

"Pays membres de XXXXXX"
"Adhésion directe à XXXXXX"

Direct members? I don't really get the nuance here.

Clarification request(s) and response
anneh: 1:39pm Apr 13, 2007: Could we have a bit more context Conor?e.g. Is XXXXXXX the same in both phrases and is it the name of the organisation? Is there a possiblilty for countries to be members as part of another grouping ?
Conor McAuley: 1:48pm Apr 13, 2007: More info - Yes XXXXXX is the same in point lines - good point.
The members are countries. The international not-for-profit organisation has regional branches in over 100 countries.
Conor McAuley: 1:50pm Apr 13, 2007: So... - ...maybe adhésion directe means that the countries are members of the main organisation (the umbrella organisation) but that there is no local branch in those countries.
anneh: 2:07pm Apr 13, 2007: Without knowing how the organisation is set up, that's how I'd read it.
anneh: 2:09pm Apr 13, 2007: and I'd say "direct membership of"
Charlie Bavington: 2:26pm Apr 13, 2007: surely if the countries are members, they would be under "pays membres"...?? You're utterly sure that only countries, and no other type of entity, can be a member?
Conor McAuley: 2:34pm Apr 13, 2007: Hey Charlie, - Yes, very sure, the countries on the world map are shaded in (two types of shade, with the second category of members predominantly being countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific), and there's no mention of other types of members.

direct membership
Explanation:
Ok, another punt, on similar lines :-)

If you are in a country that is a member, you join this crew through that country's membership.

If you are in a country that does not have membership, then you have to join the crew directly, if you want to join.

all of which is simply an explanation of the meaning behind what will thus end up being, the way I see it, a fairly literal translation of what the text says.

I agree with your last note, regardless of the complexity (or otherwise) of what the organisation means by "direct membership", the actual translation is very straightforward and literal at the end of the day. Thanks to all.

individual membership

Explanation:
I feel the key matter here is the difference between joining an organization through being a member of something else, or making a direct (personal, individual...) application. What is your opinion about this issue? Let me know in any case,
Peter LEGUIE.
