Tech/Engineering - IT (Information Technology) / Website navigational structures
French term or phrase: structuration verticale et étanche
"Ainsi, le site www.machin.com est aujourd’hui structuré autour de ces données et chaque onglet du site reflète un silo, c’est-à-dire une application ou un fournisseur de données sous-jacent. Un des inconvénients majeur de cette structuration verticale et étanche est que la navigation du site est organisée autour des sources"...

My hunch is that in a "structure étanche", there is no interaction between data in the various silos that are referenced in the previous sentence. Does anybody know how this might be rendered in English? I feel I should avoid "impermeable structure"...

Explanation:
I feel that your hunch is bang on.

My immediate thought was "highly compartmentalised" (which gives an indication of why they might have gone down a more metaphorical route, I guess), but anything, really, that suggests, as you say, that each silo, unlike man, is an island, entire of itself, would work - "self contained", possibly even "standalone" altho there are other connotations in IT of course, "precisely demarcated"... well, as I said, grab yerself a Roget's and go to town :-)
