Thanks for thinking about it. If it is what you think it is, that's what I had put ("exchanges between our components and dev"). I made a note that it wasn't clear to me what dev was. It's been handed in.

PPP's components may well communicate amongst themselves but there would be little point in modifying that communication to deal with a problem in YYY's dll. What you would possibly change is the way they communicate with YYY's dll (possibly to add more diagnostics) and you might create a recovery tool to deal with the consequences of the problem.

Realistically, I think it's time to ask the customer. You have three plausible options and no real way to choose between them. Unless you have more context...
