This could well be what one often sees.
You have a "single search field" where, for example, you enter "Alex, eye, lobotomy" because you are looking for the name of a film you once saw and those are key elements you remember. You also think it was produced by Kubrick, so you put that in the "preselection" box. Hopefully you'll get the result "A Clockwork Orange".

I agree, the "preselection" box really forms part of the search, I should have thought, but maybe it's seen not as a search criterion but as an eliminate-others-from-the-search criterion!
