French term or phrase: clé à puce
I even have a definition:

This term is opposed to "carte à puce" (smart card), which is defined as:

Any ideas out there will be much appreciated!

dongle

Explanation:
I'm more familiar with the term 'clé de protection matérielle', but this would appear to be what they are describing.

I am unaware if there may be a different technical term for this in this context, but 'dongle' is certainly one term traditionally used in computers, and is the preferred term of one of my major customers.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you so much for this speedy and accurate reply Tony M. For reasons relating to style, I ended up saying: "hardware key, or dongle"... didn't want such a good word to go to waste! Thanks again.
