He painted a wide panorama of...


Explanation:
This is a figurative expression from painting. Instead of paint the French use the term 'brosser' which is of course the idea of painting with a paint-brush. Here, the idea is simply that the speaker gave a broad description of the subject.

Sorry L Hatem I was posting as you were! One thing though the 'the' before 'slavery' would only be right is some linguistic contexts.
My full answer would be: 'He painted a wide panorama of slavery beginning in Africa/starting from Africa', but again it depends if that's really the end of the sentence.
