French term or phrase: maintien à première demande
Here is the sentence giving the context from which the above expression is drawn:
Le Sous-traitant reconnait avoir souscrit toute les polices d’assurance nécessaire pour garantir le Générateur contre tous dommages qu’il pourrait subir et dans le cas contraire, s’engage à souscrire la ou les polices en question à compter de l’entrée en vigueur du présent Contrat et d’en justifier l’existence et le maintien à première demande de TENESOL.

it is a service contract (contrat d'intervention).
I don't grasp what is meant by this expression and have no idea how to translate it correctly. I would appreciate your suggestions!

Explanation:
I think from the fact that your question is "maintien à première demande" that you may have misunderstood the parsing of the sentence.

It means:
The contractor shall, on request by Tenesol, immediately provide evidence that it has obtained the policy/policies and that they are still in force.

When i say "sentence", I mean "clause"!

agree  Kevin SC: with you on the parsing, Phil

agree  Nigel Wheatley: literally it's "on the first request", but "on request" or "on demand" is fine and more natural in English

-> Yes, and I think you could drop the "immediately".

agree  rkillings: with 'on demand'. If you have to be asked a second time, you haven't responded on demand.:-)
