Civil Division, 1st Chamber, Explanation: If it's referring to the Cour de Cassation, there are different divisions ie civil, commercial etc and within the civil division there are different chambers that are numbered. |

1st Civil Division Explanation: Sounds like the Court of Cassation. Cass. Civ. 1er. Sometimes the author doesn't put in "Cass." so you should check the cites with google to see, but it may well be that in each instance you should simply translate it "Court of Cassation, 1st Civil Division". The "1er" tells you it's the first division of some court-- which would not normally be a trial court, but normally a higher court, since courts of first instance in France have both civil and criminal jurisdiction, and decisions by such courts (tribunal d'instance, tribunal de grande instance) in civil matters are not cited 'Civ.' or "Civ 1er', but are simply cited using the abbreviation of the name of the court. |
