French term or phrase: le bénéficiaire continue la personne du cédant
from minutes of a meeting - takeover of a company. This particular paragraph deals with VAT. This seems to be a stock phrase but I can't find any equivalent. (Oh dear, the words "chew" "bitten" and "more" come to mind!)

Might I suggest that when you do your websearch, palce the phrase or expression as is within inverted commas. Taht way you get hits with that form of words only. Helpos sift through and often brings up what you need. Antoher trick is to do that and then after the ivnerted commas just add te word English on its own. Not foolproof, but certainly a good starter!

Thus "the beneficiary is to be considered as the assignor" for example...

The suggestions given can be bettered in my view!

Asker: Thanks I did do some research before posting, of course. I found the Linguee site but the two translations weren't very reassuring.

agree  writeaway: I did try to give the hint how to find it-by providing the Fr ref and then suggesting to find the EN version of the directive. This is making me feel very silly for doing my own research.
