It is the exact equivalent of "Tribunal Correctionnel in GB" as far as different systems allow it!

disagree  Marion Sadoux: "tribunal correctionnel" implies that one is dealing with a lesser offence, this must also be translated. That is why "Magistrates court" in the British context is the best translation.

neutral  Nick Lingris: My problem with this is that you have to make it longer to make it an exact equivalent. The correctionnel is a magistrate's court for criminal offences. For there is also "tribunal d'instance", which is a magistrate's court for civil matters.
