French to English translations [PRO]
Law/Patents - Law (general) / crime, criminal record
French term or phrase: X jours e.s.
In many Belgian criminal record transcripts I am translating, I have come across the phrase "X jours e.s." when talking about fines. I am aware of the phrase 'jours d.s.' (meaning "days' salary") in the context of legal fines, but "jours e.s." is new to me. I did initially think that this was a typing error, but it has cropped up far too many times to be a typing error. Here is the full context of one of its occurences:

"Condamné le [date] par jugement contradictoire...

à:

Amende: 200,00 EUR x 5,50 = 1100,00 EUR ou 45 jours e.s. avec sursis 3 ans pour 100,00 EUR x 5,50 = 550,00 EUR ou 15 jours e.s.
D.D.C: 15 jours pour t.v.m. avec sursis 3 ans."

My assumption is that it is again linked to salary, but I cannot think what the 'e' would stand for.

If anyone can offer a translation to this in the context of Belgian criminal record transcripts then please do, I would be very grateful for any help!

e.s. = emprisonnement avec sursis
Explanation:
Hello,

I think they mean you either pay the 1100.00 euros, or get a 45-day suspended sentence for three years (as long as don't break the law within those three years, no jail time; but if you, you'll go to jail for 45 days plus the time imposed for second conviction.

I know it seems like they're repeating themselves with "avec sursis 3 ans" coming right after "e.s.", but it seems right.

I hope this helps.

X days and salary

Explanation:
e.s. = et salaire

Amende: 200,00 EUR x 5,50 = 1100,00 EUR ou 45 jours e.s. avec sursis 3 ans pour 100,00 EUR x 5,50 = 550,00 EUR ou 15 jours e.s.
=
Fine: 200.00 EUR x 5.50 = 1100.00 EUR or 45 days and salary with a 3-year suspended sentence for 100.00 EUR x 5.50 = 550.EUR or 15 days and salary.

This may well need confirmation from a higher authority than me. Confidence level is only 50%.

X days salary equivalent

Explanation:
e.s. --> équivalent salaire ??

Just a guess - maybe it a way of fixing the fine applied to people who have no salary, such as retired people, students, the unemployed, and possibly also the self-employed.
