Utilisé au pluriel, le vocable était utilisé naguère ans le langage du Palais pour nommer la période pendant laquelle les Tribunaux cessaient de tenir des audiences pendant la période des congés annuels. On parlait alors des "vacations" ou des "vacances judiciaires". Pendant ce laps de temps les audiences étaient tenues pour les seules affaires urgentes par un petit nombre de magistrats désignés à cet effet par le Président de la juridiction. Ces juges constituaient la "Chambre des vacations" destinée à tenir"les audiences de vacations". Actuellement ce système a disparu, les magistrats, comme le personnel des Tribunaux, prennent leurs congés par roulement.
