French term or phrase: SI de Maître IX à M. IGREK (temoin)
This is from the transcript of a confrontation organized by the investigating magistrate between civil parties (joined in a criminal proceeding) and witnesses to the crime. Maître IX is, in this case, representing the civil parties, and appears to be asking a question by means of the investigating magistrate, who normally asks all the questions. Any ideas what "SI" would stand for in such a situation?

Sur interpellation
Explanation:
You find this abbreviation in all statements drafted by the police during questioning of suspects etc. It means "When questioned" and avoids the need to type out the question in full (so your text is unusual in this respect since it gives the question as well as the answer).
My suggestion would be
Question from Me X to Mr. Y: Where were you on the night..."

(By the way, I was a "traducteur assermenté" for 20 years in France so I know this is the correct answer, even though I have not included any Web references)

Many, many thanks - that was a headache disproportionate to the letters involved ;)
