French to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - Livestock / Animal Husbandry / Poultry | | French term or phrase: frère de poule | | This is in a rearing guide. The procedure is "éliminer les frères de poules". In response to my query, the client has, er, clarified, "il s'agit bien de frères de poules éliminés alors que les femelles sont éliminées." I'm none the wiser. So far, I'm going with 'hen brother', but it sounds more gangsta than avian... |
| | Clarification request(s) and responseF Schultze: 6:47am May 18, 2006: It sounds as if he is killing off the whole coop. Maybe "male chicken" would make sense. Hen brother seems somewhat poetic for what is going on here ;-) - Eutychus: 6:53am May 18, 2006: More details - It's not the whole lot for the chop, it's the ones that won't turn into good breeders. The underweight, the weaklings, and...
"les frères de poules, qui seront à l’origine de descendants non conformes aux exigences du couvoir."
Can hens have "siblings"...?? juliebarba: 10:32am May 18, 2006: I think that they are just saying that if a female is killed (for whatever reason), then their male 'brothers' as it were are to be killed too. IMO the males are killed on the basis of the female being killed FIRST. -

Not about poultry, but:
"So now we know that a Sex Linked cock will produce Sex Link hen siblings the same as dads’ variety. What about male siblings born from the same pairing what will they be? They will be Normal for the mutation involved, an eg is the Cockatiel the normal Cockatiel is grey bird! So in the nest from the same pairing where dad is Lutino and mum isn’t we have 4 siblings 2 with Lutino (yellowish tones) and 2 with grey normal tones, this represents 2 hens and 2 cock siblings a great way to sex your clutch which can be very important for those who are wanting to hand rear the young!" |

| Note from asker to answererThanks. It was a close call between this and Kate's answer, but I think the idea of 'siblings' was definitely in the original context, so I'll go with that here. As it happens I had sent the translation off with "cockerels" before your answer, but the client managed to lose the file and has asked for me to send it again, so male siblings it is! 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer |

| cockerel
Explanation: Perhaps what they mean is removal of cockerels (male chickens) - they are easy to spot - and then removal of hen chicks that don't conform.
The most convenient method of sexing chickens by the small flock owner is to care for the birds until they begin showing the natural secondary characteristics of their sex. In males, the combs and wattles will become larger than those on females and the head will become more angular and masculine looking. The female will remain smaller than the male and is more refined or feminine looking. In some varieties the feathers of each sex will develop a characteristic color pattern that identifies it. These varieties of birds are similar to the feather-sex strains of chickens discussed above. Sexing based on secondary sex characteristics can usually be performed after chicks attain 4 to 6 weeks of age.

Asker: Ah - you mean that these little boys are going to give inadequate genes compared to the specially bred cockerels introduced to that end?
