French to English translations [PRO] Livestock / Animal Husbandry / cat | | French term or phrase: chat teigne | I'm having trouble working out what this is - the meanings of 'teigne' (ringworm, moth...) don't seem to fit with 'cat' - perhaps a 'mangy' cat?
The context isn't very helpful: it's a joke in a set of illustrations of things you might preserve in jars - a row of jars with their labels: mushrooms, carrots etc, and then a cat in a jar with the label 'chat teigne'. The colouring of the cat suggests it's a ginger cat if anything...?
Thanks in advance. |
| | Clarification request(s) and responseDavid Goward: 11:25am Mar 13, 2008: In response to your note to w/a: "chat teigne" doesn't mean anything. It's a play on words. Most of the Google hits are also just that (most refer to name of a bar). For your joke, you're going to have to come up with sth that begins/ends with "cat" David Goward: 11:26am Mar 13, 2008: and that is generally stored in a jar. If you want help with this, you'd better say so (after the "vache" episode). Melissa McMahon: 11:44am Mar 13, 2008: Thanks for the warning David - no help required with puns. MoiraB: 12:51pm Mar 13, 2008: This is probably completely irrelevant (!), but the cat in Harry Potter (Mrs Norris) is Miss Teigne in French. Can't remember if it's a ginger cat! Perhaps another jokey allusion? Or perhaps the HP translator just had the same joke in mind. Melissa McMahon: 12:57pm Mar 13, 2008: Ha - thanks Moira, you never know when these bits of info might come in handy. The writer of the cookbook is certainly full of beans... (eek).

Asker: Yes, that's definitely possible, but 'chat teigne' does seem to be something by itself going on the google hits...
Asker: So this would be why the ghits didn't seem to converge on a common idea... thanks.
