agree  B D Finch: I wonder where this is? Sheep, cattle and horses OK, but goats left to graze freely are a menace, because they don't just graze, they browse and cause considerable damage.

  -> But they are fenced in or chained up when there are crops they could damage. Shame they can't do the same with the boar round here: they went and tusked up my lawn a few weeks ago!

agree  John Speese: All good suggestions, "turned out (to graze)" would be another choice.
