French term or phrase: double poney
from a photo caption - the photo shows what looks like a large pony. I cannot find an exact term for this breed (!)

large pony/small horse
Explanation:
I was going to suggest "riding pony" but then I came across the following :

"Double poney is just a French expression which means that the animal is a large pony or a small horse.
Most professionals refer to a "double poney" as a "poney hors taille".
Meaning that the animal is too big for pony competitions but too small for horse competitions :? "

so apparently it's not an actual breed, just a term used in French.

pony

Explanation:
When my ex-step-daughters were little they took riding lessons every week, starting on Shetland ponies, known as poneys. A double poney was a "standard" pony.

• DOUBLE PONEY:plus grand qu'un poney mais plus petit qu'un cheval.
PONEY:petit poney c'est-à-dire qu'il fait moins de 1,48m au garrot.

Under French Federation rules, anything (be it a horse or a pony) under 1.48 m is a "pony" for the purposes of competition anyway.

I think it's a bit like baleine/cachalot, in reverse. We have ponies and Shetlands (or Shetland ponies), they have poneys or poneys Shetland and double poneys where we have whales and sperm whales (and other toothed whales).

agree  Wordeffect: To be used with caution if back translating; French "double-poney" owners do not like their mounts being referred to as "poneys" - I learned that one the hard way! =)

agree  Bashiqa: Double indicates that is is from 'poney' stock.i.e. poney de poney.
2 days20 hrs
-> I thought it was more like "double whisky", i.e. a poney twice (give or take) the size of another.
