French term or phrase: Dossière
Le corps des Cheloniidae ou tortues marines à écailles, est enfermé dans une véritable boîte osseuse appelée carapace avec une partie dorsale (*dossière*) et une partie ventrale (plastron) reliées par un pont de chaque côté.

I found that "plastron" is the same in English, but cannot seem to get my hands on the term defining the back of the turtle's shell.

Asker: Thanks! How funny that the answer was right in front of me the whole time. I suppose I was looking for a more complex term.

agree  Jeux de Mots: Carapace is fine. No repetition as I assume the French 'carapace' would be translated by shell.

agree  John Speese: That's the way I'd handle it; carapace in French does have a more general meaning (shell) than it does in English (the top shell).

back (vs ventral)

Explanation:
a less technical word, like dossier, so that you can use carapace somewhere else without too many repetitions
