Management / Champagne production and marketing
French term or phrase: translation de la matrice des gains
This is a very wordy account of the history of mutually beneficial relations (and strife) between Champagne growers and Champagne merchants.

Efficacité des mécanismes de garantie et dépendance bilatérale

Les travaux sur les processus d’auto-exécution (self-enforcing) de la coopération reposent sur un principe général de **translation de la matrice des gains** selon le jeu joué par les agents. De la coopération découle une quasi-rente. Tant que leurs options préservent cette quasi-rente les agents sont incités à coopérer. Ce processus d’auto-exécution vient en appui des mécanismes de garantie explicites

Notes to answerer
Asker: The prisoner's dilemma is indeed quoted in the text.

agree  rkillings: Yep. Nothing wrong with "translation" here either: translation and rotation are operations performed on matrices in English too.

-> Thanks. Agree about "translation", just seemed an odd transformation for this type of matrix.

Reallocation of the matrix of profits

Explanation:
Here Gains means profits. A matrix has been agreed upon between the Champagne growers and Champagne merchants as to sharing of the profits. This is done in a way which is acceptable to both the parties.

payoff matrix shifting

Explanation:
"translation" is rather misleading in French, this transformation of a plan cannot be applied to a matrix, and will be judged still more misleading by mathematicians who use a matrix to represent a transformation (rotation, translation, homothety...).

This obviously refers to the cooperation strategy of the game theory, but there may a shift in the values of the payoffs of each player.

IMHO the writer used a rather pedantif "translation" here when "décalage" or "variation" should have been more appropriate.

Notes to answerer
Asker: There are indeed many examples of academic register being used in pedantic fashion. Most were easy to decipher; this one, however, left me puzzled. Thanks for your help.
