Does 'conservatoire' refer to the retention of the exec versus his expulsion?

Actually, I think "precautionary measure" or Jane's "precaution" sounds good. But since the asker hasn't taken them up, I suggest this as a way of saying its a pro tem decision to preserve the company's position by moving the chap out of the line of fire while not making the concession that his dismissal would imply.
