Mark Nathan: 12:31pm Feb 10, 2005: More sophisticated than a plug - which is what you might have in a paddling pool, but in a swimming pool this is an outlet for draining the pool or correcting its level,controlled by a valve in the plant room (sometimes it has to be pumped). "Main outlet" -

You should, I feel, have waited 30 seconds:

These are definitely NOT \"plugs\". If they had plugs like bathtubs, there would be no danger (though I still remember my terror as a child when my wicked elder brother pulled the plug out when I was still in the water, and I had visions of being sucked down the gurgler …)
