I don't know how to phrase this in English but the way the sentence is written I would think of cloth brands spying on others (in fashion) OR as per the small context: designers who go to "salon" (fashion shop/room) and check a lot of differet models to find inspiration. "Repérage" would mean they go & check, detail every cloth..(including the color) to reproduce it later on. They would have a problem memorising the color if they can't take pictures for instance. This is typically what average class brands do: they spy on designers/haute couture models (patrons) and then copy them to sell fashion-like new clothes.
