French term or phrase: fantomes voutes
Voici le texte(extrait du roman )

... Il la haira desormais gravement cette incontournable etape des courses hebdomadaires. Il meprisait depuis longtemps ces endroits de nulle part --- musique de merde, produits mediocres, geographie insinuante, fantomes voutes qui roulent d'une gondole a l'autre. Mais il y allait toutes les semaines, contradictions d'aujourd'hui.

'fantomes voutes qui roulent...' ca veut dire quoi?
qch. comme un argot ou une expression poetique, n'est-ce pas?

Merci d'avance...

neutral  Tony M: That's what I thought too, though it's curious the writer passes from singular 'il' to plural here? Is that good FR style... or simple carelessness?

-> il deals with the narrator/ the ghosts are other customers doing their shopping.

agree  Sandra Petch: I don't see the "il / ils" problem - il, the narrator, then the plural stooping ghosts.
