French to English translations [PRO] Materials (Plastics, Ceramics, etc.)
French term or phrase:grani-élastique
The complete sentence is: "Prévoir un revêtement de sol du même type que celui qui est utilisé dans les camions ou dans les vans (du grani-élastique)". This is about a shower for for horses.
I cannot really find this word anywhere!
In the end, I decided that Granilastic is the most suitable answer. It is a difficult word, but it perfectly fits to the original (and I actually agree that few French speakers would know the meaning of "grani-elastique", so the source itself is not clear for everyone). I thank you all for your help!
I agree in general with Bourth's comments BUT: 'Frigidaire' is a term understood by any French speaker whereas 'grani-élastique' is the name of a product that, I assume, very few French speakers would know anything about. That is why I think it could be translated as 'granilastic' (with or without capital G, I don't know.)
if in a translation you were told that someone took a beer out of the frigidaire or marked up a translation with a stabilo, would you assume those words were intended as trade names? We cannot know. It's possible they actually mean "a refrigerator made by Frigidaire" or a "brightly coloured transparent ink marker with the registered name Stabilo", but given the French propensity to use trade names generically, and in the absence of that all-important capital letter, I'd be tempted to interpret it generically.
Of course I am assuming that by grani-élastique they DO mean granilastic (and not Granilastic or something else entirely). If you wish to stick close to the original, we might ask HOW CLOSE? Should you leave "grani-élastique" or 'correct' it to "granilastic" or "Granilastic"?
Granilastic is surely a correct answer, but I actually agree with Bourth: it could be too "difficult". This online magazine will be probably read by teens and kids, so maybe I should make things easy for them...
Explanation: "Granulated rubber flooring" is common enough for equine installations, but maybe there is an objection to "rubber" if that is not the material used. Cork is also used, apparently, and synthetic "rubbers" too I imagine.

However it does not appear to be well-known brand in the English-speaking world. Most ghits seem to be French, Italian, German, etc.

Remember too that French easily uses proprietary names generically (e.g. Scotch, Frigidaire, Stabilo), so there is no guarantee that the actual Granilastic product is meant. An "explanatory translation" may be required.
